If you have GU10 light fittings in your home, you know that the bulbs use a lot of energy, and they don’t last long! Replacing them with LED GU10 bulbs would mean:

• Never having to replace them again! LED last so long you’ll probably move homes before they burn out!
• Drastically reduced energy consumption: a typical LED bulb uses less than a tenth of the energy of a regular halogen bulb.

The problem until now has been the low light output of LED replacement bulbs. But this new bulb from Exergi changes all that. Using Hyperbright LED bulbs from CREE Semiconductor, this bulb is easily as bright as a standard 50W bulb, yet consumes only 4W!

The one downside is the price: they are a lot more expensive. But if you factor in that they probably last ten times as long, and use less than a tenth of the power, these GU10 LED replacements are a smart buy. With an average life of 20,000 hours, if you left them on 24/7 they would last for more than two years! With an average burn time of 8 hours a day, they would last nearly 7 years. In that time you’d probably get through 10 ordinary bulbs (including the hassle of changing them) and pay ten times as much in electricity to run them.

Instead of replacing all your GU10’s in one fell swoop, you could always buy the LED replacements as and when your old bulbs go. That would spread the cost of replacement, and get maximum use out of the existing bulbs. Bookmark this page so you can come back and buy them as you need them!

Nanotechnology could be the key to greatly increasing the light output from light emitting diodes (LEDs), thus paving the way for much brighter LED lights and lamps.

A researcher in Scotland has discovered that making millions of tiny holes in LEDs can greatly increase their light output. Dr Faiz Rahman at the University of Glasgow led the project to find ways of increasing light output. Due to the refractive properties of the material used to create LEDs, most of the light is reflected back into the light itself, reducing its potential light output.

Making tiny holes in the material releases more light. Initially the team used an electron microscope to make the holes, a completely uneconomic process due to the time taken to do just one LED. But a new technique, called nano-imprint lithography, allows the holes to be imprinted into the LED substrate during manufacture. Once the technique becomes widespread, LED lights should be bright enough to replace conventional tungsten and compact flourescent lighting, which will mean great energy savings, and never having to replace a bulb!
